Membership Criteria
Membership CriteriaThe IFPP is set up specifically for people practicing as psychoanalytic psychotherapists. There are three levels of membership: full, associate and student members.
Full Membership:
- Applicants must be qualified in a training specifically in psychoanalytic psychotherapy or psychoanalysis with adults. This training must be recognized by the IFPP.
- The training period should include a minimum of 250 hours of individual psychoanalytic psychotherapy or psychoanalysis, at least twice weekly, over three years. All psychoanalytic psychotherapists and psychoanalysts should be IFPP members or members of an equivalent body.
- Individual supervision should be at least once weekly over the three-year period of a training course with an accredited psychoanalytic psychotherapist or psychoanalyst (as in 2 above). The supervision should consist of a minimum of two cases over three years, totalling a minimum of 120 hours.
- A minimum of two years experience working as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, including a further 80 hours of individual post qualification supervision in a two-year period, is required for full membership.
- Your psychotherapeutic work should be psychoanalytic only.
Applicants must be qualified in a training specifically in psychoanalytic psychotherapy or psychoanalysis with adults. This training must be recognized by the IFPP.
Note: Applicants may still not have fulfilled the full requirement in respect of personal therapy or analysis (2 above) or supervision (3 above) that is necessary for full membership. They should still be engaged in both of these. They may also not have fulfilled the requirement of two years post qualification experience (4 above) - this does not affect their eligibility for associate membership.
Student Membership:- Applicants must be currently undertaking a training specifically in psychoanalytic psychotherapy or psychoanalysis with adults.
- Applicants must be currently in psychoanalytic psychotherapy or psychoanalysis.
- If applicants are working with clients they must be in supervision with a psychoanalytic psychotherapist or psychoanalyst. The course involved and the psychotherapist, psychoanalyst and supervisor must all be recognized by the IFPP
